A2M detects the pitch of the audio and converts it into the corresponding MIDI notes in real-time. This enables users to play instruments such as guitar, saxophone, or even sing, while triggering sounds in virtual instruments. These acoustic or electric instruments, as well as your voice, can function as a MIDI controller.
A2M is available as both an AUv3 plugin and a standalone application, with the latter serving as the AU host for this particular plugin. What sets A2M apart is its dual functionality as both an audio effect and a MIDI effect, offering a unique blend of features. It analyzes input sounds akin to an audio effect while producing output MIDI events like a traditional MIDI effect.

A2M does not function as an AU plugin within GarageBand; however, its standalone version supports all MIDI-compatible applications, including GarageBand. The application transmits MIDI events through the virtual MIDI port, with a list of active and inactive MIDI ports accessible in the app settings under MIDI Settings → Outputs.

- Audio input buffer size: The buffer size directly impacts CPU load and latency. A buffer lower than 512 should be set judiciously based on processor strength. For standalone A2M applications, the buffer size adjustment is available in the app settings under Audio Settings → Buffer Size.
- Plugin
- Pitch recognition method: Choose between two algorithms - autocorrelation or FFT with parabolic interpolation.
- Gate Threshold and Input Gain: Fine-tune A2M's performance by adjusting these parameters to filter out background noise.
- Latency / Accuracy: Balance between CPU usage and latency with various settings.
- Velocity Gain: Adjust the volume of the virtual instrument with ease.
Known limitations in the current version:
- No polyphony
- No pitch bending
